New owners, Anne and Colin Slinger, first visited Wellpark in late 2009. Having decided to re-locate to Scotland’s West Coast and having looked at many hotels it was love at first sight with both the area and the house. It was immediately obvious that the house and location were ideally suited to a small quality hotel. Upon discovering that for many years, until the mid 1980’s, Wellpark had operated as a hotel, Anne and Colin were determined to acquire the property and realise their vision. They were lucky enough to move into Wellpark in early 2010.
All the day to day operations are overseen by Anne. Since first working in the hotel and restaurant business in 1973 and with many years in the travel and tourism industry having travelled extensively both for business and pleasure, it was always her dream to run the sort of hotel she and Colin would enjoy, with the emphasis on traditional quality hospitality, good freshly cooked, locally sourced produce and personal service. Add to this the perfect location and we hope our guests will love Wellpark as much as we do. We look forward to welcoming you.
THE WARDROOM RESTAURANT
All meals are taken in the original elegant dining room overlooking the Kyles and Isle of Bute. With the ornate cornicing, beautiful ceiling rose and superb Victorian fireplace, which when chilly outside provides a warming log fire complementing the cast iron radiators, a more welcoming restaurant is hard to imagine.
RECEPTION/ BAR
Located on the left of the hallway this elegant room with its marble fireplace and stunning views also has a comfortable seating area.
LOUNGE
At the end of the hallway is the superb lounge. A large room with triple aspect windows, including a huge bay overlooking the Kyles and Isle of Bute, Edwardian fireplace, baby grand piano, comfortable sofas and a window seat, this is the ideal room to take tea and coffee, enjoy a pre-dinner drink, enjoy the amazing views taking advantage of the telescope provided, or simply relax.
THE SPINNAKER ROOM
In addition there is a spacious room available for private parties, functions, business meetings and receptions all tailored to your individual requirements.
Tighnabruaich, on Argyll’s secret coast and one of its most cherished villages, is situated on the west side of the Kyles of Bute in a tranquil, sheltered position and is an absolute jewel in the crown. Once a bustling fishing village it became popular in the 19th century with wealthy Glasgow merchants, many of whom built homes here. Some were merely used as holiday homes for a brief escape from an increasingly industrialised Glasgow. Others made Tighnabruaich their permanent home and would commute to their offices and factories in Glasgow by one of the many steamers which served the Clyde and the Kyles.
Today, Tighnabruaich has much to offer the visitor. It is a well known anchorage for yachtsmen, the base for the Kyles of Bute Sailing Club, which welcomes visitors and there is an excellent sailing and windsurfing school.
Located on section two of the Cowal way, walkers can enjoy short or lengthy hikes to suit their abilities. For the more adventurous guided walks with an experienced ranger can be organised. Fishing, either by private hire boat or on the delightful vessel, Morag, is plentiful.
The village has several interesting and useful shops. The Rowan Tree offers a delightful selection of gifts and souvenirs, beautiful postcards of the area can be found in the Post Office and a visit to the Tighnabruaich Gallery is a must for any lovers of contemporary art along with beautiful glassware, handmade jewellery, woollens and other gifts. The grocery store provides all day to day needs. For meals and snacks visit the Kyles cafe, Susy’s Tearooms or the delightful Burnside Bistro.
Inspired by the true elegance and tradition of the sailing era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries rooms are named after the famous J class racing yachts, many of which have since been restored to their original opulent condition. Some say even better! In the late 1930’s local man, Chester Currie was lucky enough to sail on Endeavour 1 and to be the only Scot in a crew of twenty six sailing on Velsheda. After racing all around the British Isles the final race of the season finished on the Clyde. In each room you will see superb prints of the appropriate J Class yacht by the renowned artist, Tim Thompson.
All rooms have been individually decorated and furnished to a high standard and for your comfort and enjoyment offer: Flat screen HD T.V.s with FreeSat and DVD player, Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer and towelling robes for use during your stay. Ranger, Shamrock and Velsheda also have IPod docks.
