TIGHNABRUAICH - Scotland
![]()
Tighnabruaich, on Argylls secret coast and one of its most cherished villages, is situated on the west side of the Kyles of Bute in a tranquil, sheltered position and is an absolute jewel in the crown. Once a bustling fishing village it became popular in the 19th century with wealthy Glasgow merchants, many of whom built homes here. Some were merely used as holiday homes for a brief escape from an increasingly industrialised Glasgow. Others made Tighnabruaich their permanent home and would commute to their offices and factories in Glasgow by one of the many steamers which served the Clyde and the Kyles.
Today, Tighnabruaich has much to offer the visitor. It is a well known anchorage for yachtsmen, the base for the Kyles of Bute Sailing Club, which welcomes visitors and there is an excellent sailing and windsurfing school.
Located on section two of the Cowal way, walkers can enjoy short or lengthy hikes to suit their abilities. For the more adventurous guided walks with an experienced ranger can be organised. Fishing, either by private hire boat or on the delightful vessel, Morag, is plentiful.
The village has several interesting and useful shops. The Rowan Tree offers a delightful selection of gifts and souvenirs, beautiful postcards of the area can be found in the Post Office and a visit to the Tighnabruaich Gallery is a must for any lovers of contemporary art along with beautiful glassware, handmade jewellery, woollens and other gifts. The grocery store provides all day to day needs. For meals and snacks visit the Kyles cafe, Susys Tearooms or the delightful Burnside Bistro.
